Industrial design - designing industrial products
Industrial design - often also referred to as product design - includes the design and creation of consumer and capital goods. The former refers to products for personal use such as furniture, cars, fitted kitchens, electronic devices for the home, private crafts or the garden, toys, etc., while capital goods are understood to mean machines for production, medical technology devices and commercial vehicles.
The design freedom of industrial designers varies greatly from product to product and depends on the type, function and purpose of the end product. A clear definition of objectives at the beginning of a project serves as a guide and basis for the subsequent design steps. The first sketches are then made, whereby the construction and design should harmonize perfectly. Based on these drafts, the first full-size or true-to-scale models are then built in real or virtual form. It is not uncommon for different variants and designs to be implemented before a single design is finally selected and developed further. The decision is often also based on the results of market research.
Product design specialists have a keen imagination and are considered innovative designers. They can rethink the outdated and create completely new products with new ideas and shapes. Industrial design is often decisive for the success, popularity and therefore the sales figures of a product.
Are you looking for training or further education opportunities in the field of industrial design? We highly recommend, for example, the practical and interesting course as a product designer HF (formerly designer HF product design, specializing in industrial design), which can be completed as a higher technical college course alongside work.
