What is Excel? What can the program do and what is it used for?

MS Excel is a spreadsheet program and is used wherever numbers are used, where totals are added up, where subtotals and statistics are of interest and where simple to complex calculations have to be carried out regularly - in other words: everywhere in the business world and also in private households.

The range of possibilities offered by the program is huge, from the simple recording of budget expenditure or time spent to the management of stock levels and comprehensive operational and financial accounting with complex reporting. Basic knowledge is sufficient for some areas of application, while more in-depth knowledge is required for others. Accordingly, Excel is taught at different levels.

MS (for "Microsoft") Excel is a program in the Microsoft Office package. MS Office packages include the programs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Skype for Business, OneNote, Project, Publisher, Teams and Visio. Basic knowledge in the use of Excel, Word (word processing program) and PowerPoint (presentation program) is a minimum requirement in everyday office life today.
