Industrial foreman advanced training (HFP) (new: production manager industry): For a successful rise in management

Would you like to take on a management position in your company in the areas of island or department management in production, service, maintenance or logistics and further expand your management position? Are you looking for further training that prepares you for a management position in business and is recognized throughout Switzerland? If so, the course leading to the Swiss Federal Diploma in Industrial Management HFP (new: Production Manager Industry) could be just the right course for you.

Industrial foremen and women with a federal diploma (new: industrial production manager) manage organizations with several employees and therefore have a management function. They work in industry and are active in various areas. An industrial foreman must have the following skills: Working in a team, managing employees, training employees, solving problems methodically and correctly as well as being convincing in discussions. In addition to these requirements, the following must also be met: completed vocational training, have been working in a management role for several months as a group leader, foreman, island manager, shift leader, team leader or deputy industrial foreman.

Some schools also require students to pass an entrance examination. Further training to become an industrial foreman HFP (new: industrial production manager) is aimed at management employees who are intended for an industrial foreman, department manager or island manager position in production, maintenance, service, logistics or similar areas or who already hold such a position and want to fill it even more professionally. They are the link between senior management and the employees working on the shop floor or in operations. They make a decisive contribution to the efficiency of service provision and therefore to the success of the company.

The aim of this training course is to teach participants important management techniques that will make them successful in the company. Important key qualifications are taught and practiced using various learning topics. This course to become a master craftsman in industry trains you in areas such as business administration, communication, employee management, production management, project management as well as the company and its environment. This means that you have lessons one evening a week and on a Saturday, for example, so you can still pursue at least 90 percent of your previous professional activity. However, there are also schools where you can attend a course for two evenings or a whole day during the week, so that you can choose the further training course to become an Industrial Master Craftsman HFP (new: Production Manager Industry) that suits you best.


Questions and answers

For industrial foremen and women with a federal diploma (new: production manager industry), a wide variety of courses and training programs at schools and further education institutions are suitable, such as the "European Industrial Engineer (EIE)" certificate from SwissMTM and the Swissmen Academy, as well as further training at higher technical colleges in mechanical engineering technician (formerly technician HF mechanical engineering), metal construction technician (formerly technician HF metal construction) or process technician (formerly technician HF business processes). Depending on previous education, courses at universities of applied sciences may also be suitable, for example in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or systems engineering, as well as postgraduate courses at universities in the form of CAS, DAS or MAS continuing education courses.

The advanced technical examination for industrial foreman with a federal diploma (new: production manager industry) consists of a total of five examination parts. The most extensive part of the examination is probably the diploma thesis (three parts), which is also weighted twice in addition to the "case study". The "practical situations" part of the examination is examined orally and is weighted once.

The duration of the industrial master craftsman course varies depending on the school, but is usually between three and four semesters. As the teaching models vary, please contact the individual schools directly via the contact form for the current dates.

The following points apply for admission to the Advanced Technical Examination for Industrial Foremen (new: Production Manager Industry):

  • Federal certificate of proficiency or equivalent qualification and at least four years of relevant professional experience after graduation, including two years in a management position

Or

  • Swiss Federal Vocational Certificate or equivalent qualification and at least 6 years of relevant professional experience after graduation, including two years in a management position

Or

  • Degree at tertiary level and at least 2 years of relevant professional experience in a management role

Industrial production managers (formerly industrial foremen) are responsible for planning and organization, among other things. They organize personnel assignments and teams and ensure smooth shift operations. They also take care of the further development of their employees. They are also responsible for planning and optimizing the use of machines, equipment, materials and energy.

The tasks of industrial production managers (formerly industrial foremen) also include production, quality assurance and strategy. This means, for example, that they define production processes and layouts and manage production, taking into account all the necessary means and resources.

They are also responsible for planning and monitoring project processes. They are also responsible for managing the flow of goods and the procurement process (supply chain management). They also analyze the relevant key figures and take optimization measures. In this way, they ensure the business and financial management of their area of responsibility.
