Commercial diploma: What are the main disadvantages?

The commercial diploma enables you to take on a demanding job in business or administration. You are proficient in a wide range of commercial processing tasks and can communicate fluently in at least one foreign language, both orally and in writing.

Trade diploma - the main disadvantages are:

  1. The commercial diploma is neither a federal qualification nor an apprenticeship certificate (EFZ). However, the VSH diploma usually has the same status in the working world as a basic commercial training with a federal certificate of proficiency, i.e. it can be compared to the KV diploma in terms of level. The commercial diploma is also recognized by the Swiss Trade Association SGV. After successful completion, the protected title "Kaufmann / Kauffrau VSH" may be used. This certifies in-depth knowledge of business topics.
  2. At certificate level, the course content and admission requirements are generally not regulated and can be determined autonomously by the schools. The commercial diploma, on the other hand, is subject to clear regulations and certified training quality in accordance with the VSH (Association of Swiss Commercial Schools) or Edupool (Swiss Commercial Association).
  3. As business school is usually completed alongside work and the time required for preparation and follow-up work, self-study and examinations is considerable, free time often has to be foregone.
  4. Even after the commercial diploma, you often haven't reached your goal yet: if you want to work as a qualified specialist in the commercial sector, you should continue your education or specialize afterwards. For example, a one-year internship (possibly with a vocational baccalaureate) can lead to a federal certificate of proficiency in commerce. This can be followed by interesting further training at clerk level or professional examinations in marketing, sales, etc.

Graduates can usually take up an interesting position in the commercial sector. In most cases, this is at clerk level. However, nothing stands in the way of further development towards a specialist qualification up to management level.
