Smart Home: Professionals for the intelligent living of the future

Smart home refers to the development and use of technical processes, special devices and systems in houses or (private) living spaces that are networked with each other. It is also known under the terms "intelligent living", "smart living", "multimedia home", "eHome", "Internet home", "smart living" or simply summarized as "house of the future".

Smart homes offer users greater convenience, quality of life and flexibility, more security and greater cost-effectiveness.

Energy consumption is improved or used more efficiently, which protects the environment and also leads to lower energy costs. For older people, wristbands with an integrated alarm button or carpets with fall sensors make it possible to live at home for longer and stay in familiar surroundings even if they have health problems. The wristbands are linked to a hands-free system, for example, which can be used to organize help.

These points, together with the digital developments and technical possibilities of recent years, have once again given a powerful boost to smart homes.

Whether it's a central display at home for controlling the heating system, lighting, (sun) blinds, washing machine, garden irrigation or audio and multimedia systems, mobile apps for on the go or voice assistants from global players such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft or Samsung - the range of smart home products and solutions is now numerous and the possible applications diverse. Most products and solutions can be adapted and automated according to individual requirements. Demand is correspondingly high.

Depending on the sector, individual needs, wishes and scope, implementation requires not only the corresponding financial resources, but also specific expertise in smart living. Qualified specialists with smart home training are therefore in demand on the job market.

Questions and answers

A Smart Home course is usually divided into three modules on

  • Quality of life and cultural activities
  • Health
  • Security

Each module deals with topic-specific aspects such as living and ageing in the future, health promotion, public welfare, changing means of communication, ambient assistant living, health systems and health prevention and safety using digital means, living in old age, smart city, robotics and artificial intelligence, etc.

This can vary depending on the provider and training program. For example, IT skills may be required for a smart home training course. Please contact the provider of your choice directly, they will be happy to provide you with information.

The target groups for further training in the field of smart homes include representatives of municipal, city and regional associations, social institutions or retirement, nursing and hospital homes as well as system integrators, entrepreneurs, construction planners and architects.

A CAS in Smart Home is one of the extra-occupational continuing education courses offered by universities.

The prerequisite for participation is therefore a tertiary degree from a university/ETH, university of applied sciences (UAS), university of applied sciences and others as well as at least two years of professional experience after graduation.

If you have equivalent qualifications and several years of work experience, some providers also allow admission "sur dossier". Please contact the provider of your choice directly.
