Head teacher training: Managing and leading the school professionally

Head teachers are responsible for the operational management of a school, either as part of a team or on their own. This can be from kindergarten to upper secondary level, whereby it can happen that several schools are combined into a so-called "school unit". Depending on the organizational structure and the political framework, the tasks of head teachers may be narrower or broader.

Among other things, they are responsible for pedagogical leadership, which takes place together with the teaching staff. For example, mission statements, operational concepts and school programs are compiled. They are also responsible for personnel management, i.e. the planning, selection, training and assessment of school staff. They are also responsible for school management. This includes administration, data collection and analysis, budget preparation and control and resource management. Finally, public relations also plays an important role.

School management is confronted with various challenges. Various factors play a role here, such as digitalization and technological change, teacher shortages, inclusion and diversity, personalized learning, flexible learning environments, parent relationships, mental health awareness, etc. In order to maintain and continuously improve school quality and ensure that school operations run smoothly, principal training is necessary.

Among other things, these challenges are addressed in a principal training course and principals are thus comprehensively and specifically prepared for their leadership role. The learning content of school leadership training can vary from provider to provider. In addition to the "basic courses", there are also principal training courses for "advanced learners", i.e. people with experience in school management. The latter offers the opportunity to delve deeper into certain topics. A central aspect of training to become a principal is the high level of practical relevance and the exchange of experience between participants.

Would you like to become a head teacher? Would you like to develop your personal and professional skills? Expand your knowledge and skills and exchange ideas with other principals on current school management topics in a professional learning environment? Then principal training is the right choice for you.

Questions and answers

Whether your head teacher training is paid for by your employer is very individual and varies from employer to employer. It is best to approach your line manager and explain your training plans to him/her. Ask about support options.

The duration of head teacher training is determined independently by the schools. You should therefore expect differences. There are training courses that only last a few days, but there are also those that are more extensive and extend over several semesters. You can obtain more detailed information directly from the schools.

This depends, among other things, on which target group the principal training is aimed at. For example, there are further training courses that are explicitly aimed at principals who already have several years of professional experience in this area.

However, there are of course also "basic" further training courses that are explicitly aimed at prospective managers in school management. As a rule, no prior professional experience in school management is required.

Good to know: The admission requirements are set independently by the schools. There may therefore be differences.

Whether you can also complete the head teacher training online depends on the teaching formats offered by the school. It is up to the school to decide which teaching formats it offers. In addition to traditional face-to-face teaching, many schools now also offer other forms of teaching, such as online teaching or hybrid teaching.

The cost of a head teacher training course varies depending on the provider. The costs are set by the schools themselves. You should therefore enquire there.

As a rule, the course costs range from CHF 3,000 to CHF 9,000. Please note that some providers charge additional costs, e.g. for examination fees and/or teaching materials.
