Head teachers are responsible for the operational management of a school, either as part of a team or on their own. This can be from kindergarten to upper secondary level, whereby it can happen that several schools are combined into a so-called "school unit". Depending on the organizational structure and the political framework, the tasks of head teachers may be narrower or broader.

Among other things, they are responsible for pedagogical leadership, which takes place together with the teaching staff. For example, mission statements, operational concepts and school programs are compiled. This includes administration, data collection and analysis, budget preparation and control and resource management. Finally, public relations also plays an important role.

The learning content of school leadership training can vary from provider to provider. In addition to the "basic courses", there are also principal training courses for "advanced learners", i.e. people with experience in school management. The latter offers the opportunity to delve deeper into certain topics. A central aspect of training to become a principal is the high level of practical relevance and the exchange of experience between participants.
