MAS Applied History: also for non-historians

Some providers in Switzerland offer a degree in applied history as a MAS Applied History postgraduate course. In contrast to conventional history studies, the MAS is designed to incorporate the knowledge acquired into practice and everyday working life, even for non-historians. This is because journalists, politicians and people working in administration are all dependent on knowledge of historical contexts, the consequences of which can often still be felt today. This means that the MAS Applied History places today's social or political events in the context of historical events in order to find solutions to current problems from these developments.

This examination of theoretical solutions to problems enables graduates of the MAS Applied History to recognize correlations in their day-to-day work and to develop strategies and models to improve or eliminate these problems. You do not need a degree in history for the MAS Applied History, but you do need a degree in any subject.

Der MAS in Applied History wird meist innerhalb von vier Semestern abgeschlossen.

Angesprochen für die Weiterbildung MAS Applied History sind Persönlichkeiten aus ganz unterschiedlichen Branchen und Tätigkeitsfeldern, die ihren Horizont erweitern und einen international ausgerichteten Weiterbildungsstudiengang besuchen möchten. Teilnehmende sind etwa bei Banken und Versicherungen angestellt, in der Bildung und Forschung tätig, in der Wirtschaft, der Medizin, dem Gesundheitswesen oder dem Sozialwesen, im Dienstleistungssektor oder im Bereich Medien und Kultur anzutreffen.

Der Unterricht des MAS Applied History wird in der Regel freitags und samstags durchgeführt, wobei nicht wöchentlich. Hinzu kommen mehrtägige Summerschools (2. bis 4. Semester).

Der MAS Applied History besteht aus 33 Modulen, die sich über vier Semester verteilen. Diese Module setzten sich aus Pflichtmodulen und Wahlmodulen zusammen, sowie aus Schools, etwa mehrtägige Reisen nach Kuba oder Krakau. Im vierten Semester wird zudem die Masterarbeit verfasst.

Für die Zulassung zum MAS in Applied History wird ein Hochschulabschluss auf Masterstufe vorausgesetzt, sowie mehrjährige Berufserfahrung. Personen mit einem Bachelorabschluss und qualifizierter Berufserfahrung können in Ausnahmefällen von der Studienleitung zugelassen werden.

Das Masterstudium MAS Applied History umfasst obligatorische, fakultative sowie School Module. Die obligatorischen Module beinhalten etwa das Einführungsmodul, Module zu Geschichte und Politik, Geschichte und Religion, Geschichte und Ökonomie, Geschichte und Medien, Transatlantische Beziehungen, Grosse Geschichtsschreibung, Terrorismus und Gewalt, Geschichte und Umwelt, sowie Megatrends. Als fakultative Module stehen etwa Themen wie Monarchie heute, Sprache der Kultur, Geschichte und Psychologie, Weltperspektiven, Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus, Erinnerungskulturen oder Finanzplatz CH zur Verfügung. Desweiteren werden Summerschools in unterschiedliche internationale Städte organisiert, etwa in Kuba, Griechenland, Warschau, Prag, Krakau und Tokio.
