Martemeo originated in the Netherlands at the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s and was developed and tested by the Dutch woman Maria Aarts. The main driving force behind this was her realization that conventional counselling methods in the field of educational counselling brought little success and change. She attributed this primarily to the difficulty of communicating helpful scientific findings to educators and parents in such a way that they understand them well despite the usually very abstract pedagogical jargon - which is a prerequisite for recognizing the situations and then implementing the findings in everyday life.

In this way, she developed a completely new basis for parenting advice. What we may have seen on TV today on Supernanny became part of Aart's everyday practice: she recorded everyday situations in the family or at the workplace of those seeking advice on video and then discussed the scenes with those affected. In doing so, she deliberately focused on the strengths of the people involved so that these could be recognized and subsequently give them the strength to actively resolve difficult situations.
