Aquatic ecology: environmental promotion and species identification
In aquatic ecology, ponds, standing waters and ponds, groundwater bodies, watercourses and lakes that have no connection to the sea, i.e. any form of inland water, are investigated. Limnology, as this science is known, is primarily concerned with the energy and material balance of ecosystems, their structures and functions. People working in public administration, planning or ecological offices in particular are often confronted with the topics of water ecology, water protection, nature conservation, water monitoring and species protection in their day-to-day work and should have a sound knowledge of these areas.
The CAS Phytobenthos - Aquatic Plants and Algae certificate course deals in detail with the underwater flora of watercourses and still waters such as lake shores and ponds and is ideally suited as an in-service training course in this area. This course has a modular structure and takes 18 months to complete. A final thesis, which is made up of Module 1 (bioindicators) and Module 2 (species knowledge), awards you the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Phytobenthos if you pass.
During the first module, you will be introduced to some aspects of aquatic ecology, which will train you in the individual methods for examining and analyzing watercourses and standing waters, as well as in the ecology and systematics of macrophytes, macroalgae and diatoms. Module 2 deals in detail with the species knowledge of macroalgae and diatoms, macrophytes, lichens and mosses. With this knowledge acquired in the aquatic ecology course, they are then able to independently apply, analyze and present recognized methods of bioindication in order to preserve biodiversity in our waters and initiate species protection programs or environmental impact assessments.
