Export clerk: creating documents for the whole world

The "Export Clerk" courses are suitable for career changers as well as for people who already have experience in handling export orders. The courses are part-time and last approx. 4 months. Completion of the course enables you to enter this professional world and take the next step in your career: further training to obtain the federal certificate "Foreign Trade Specialist".

Export clerk - professionals for handling all export transactions

Export clerks take care of the administrative processing of export transactions. The sale and shipment of goods and products abroad is very important for Switzerland. Export transactions account for a large proportion of gross domestic product (GDP). Our most important trading partners are other industrialized countries, especially the EU. The most important export sectors are the chemical, pharmaceutical and watchmaking industries.

For Switzerland as an "export nation", it is important that international trading companies have enough competent export specialists at their disposal. The courses are aimed at committed people from all areas of foreign trade: import, export, sales, forwarding, logistics, distribution and supply chain management, as well as lateral entrants and those returning to the industry.

With the "Export clerk" course, you will acquire comprehensive knowledge in these areas in a short space of time, gain an overview of the entire export business and be ready to get started. If you are already working in the export sector, you can deepen your knowledge and acquire in-depth specialist knowledge.


Questions and answers

The main tasks in export clerk jobs are as follows:

  • Recording of incoming orders
  • Ordering from the supplier plants
  • Requesting and preparing the necessary export documents such as certificates of origin, certificates
  • Processing of letters of credit, documentary collections and bank guarantees
  • Provision of transport documents and placement of forwarding orders
  • Invoicing and monitoring incoming payments
  • Processing of insurance claims
  • Telephone and written contact with customers, suppliers, banks, forwarding agents, official bodies and insurance companies

Export clerks have the following responsibilities:

  • for the timely, cost-optimized, administrative order processing of incoming export orders for the territories and customers he is responsible for
  • organizes his work area independently
  • Administrative activities in connection with export processing
  • has collective authority to act
  • signs for correspondence together with another authorized signatory

The target group of a further training course for export specialists is:

  • Preparation of employees who are newly confronted with the export handling of goods
  • Career changers who want to work in export in the near future and improve their chances on the job market
  • Suitable for all employees working in export who want to refresh their knowledge or gain an overall view of the export business
  • as a measure for the general promotion of young talent

The following contracts are possible in export processing:

  • Diploma of the Swiss Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SIHK)
  • Certificate of the provider

The training provides a good basis for further training such as the "Foreign Trade Specialist" course as preparation for the professional examination and later "Foreign Trade Manager" for the higher professional examination.

In an export clerk apprenticeship you learn the following:

  • International framework conditions
  • Incoterms
  • Customs procedures, tariff classification, international customs tariff
  • Various forms of sales partners
  • Forwarding and export processing
  • Creating certificates of origin correctly and ATA carnets
  • Documentary collection and letter of credit, bank guarantees
  • Determining the origin of a product, free trade agreements, rules of origin
  • Value added tax on exports and imports

The training to become an export specialist with a certificate lasts six days. There is also an exam preparation day. The diploma examination must also be passed.
