What educational paths and degrees are there in parent coaching and educational counseling?

The terms "parent coaching" and "parenting advice" refer to services that deal with the development of children, parenting issues and the opportunities and problems of parents.

The offers are aimed at two different target groups:

  • Courses and offers for parents and guardians to directly support them in their educational tasks
  • Courses and offers for professionals who support and advise parents and guardians.

Some offers focus on specific topics, such as medical issues with small children, dealing with "problem children" or learning support.

Educational pathways, qualifications and requirements

The courses and further training in parent coaching and educational counseling conclude with a school certificate or diploma.

The admission requirements depend on the course objective:

  • Interest and practical experience are usually sufficient for further training courses in which you acquire the know-how for your own educational tasks.
  • If you want to advise or coach parents and other educators professionally, many providers require further professional training in the field of social work or health, professional experience or a degree in psychology (FH or university) for admission to training. Further training in parent coaching often takes place as a specialization after the general training to become a coach.

CautionSometimes "educational counselor" is equated with "school psychologist". However, different admission requirements apply to this professional function: You can only work as a school psychologist if you have a university degree in psychology with a Master's degree.
