Retail specialist EFZ: A varied profession with daily customer contact

Do you love contact with people? Do you have a winning manner or would you like to acquire one through training? Would you like to advise customers and encourage them to buy the right product? Then you've come to the right place for training as a retail specialist. Here you will learn how to deal with customers in various situations. You will also be involved in managing the product range and planning the necessary staff deployment. For special promotions, you will learn how to decorate a store to promote sales. Training as a retail sales assistant will not only take you a big step forward professionally, but also personally.

Training as a retail specialist is a federally recognized apprenticeship that leads to a federal certificate of proficiency (EFZ). Retail specialists are employed in every conceivable type of retail trade, especially in department stores, large-scale distributors, specialist stores or chain stores. A wide range of different further training courses can be completed following the apprenticeship. For example, it is possible to take a professional examination with a federal certificate as a retail specialist, marketing specialist, purchasing specialist or sales specialist.

During your training as a retail specialist, you will visit a store that you have chosen and get to know the business, advice, management and product range in detail. One and a half days a week, you will attend a vocational college where you will learn about business, German, society, retailing, the industry and foreign languages. In the final year of their three-year training, retail specialists can choose to focus on either consulting or management.

Questions and answers

Die Ausbildung zum Detailhandelsfachmann oder zur Detailhandelsfachfrau mit eidgenössischem Fähigkeitszeugnis dauert drei Jahre. Sie findet je nach gewählter Ausrichtung (Haushalt, Möbel, Do it yourself, Teppich und Bodenbeläge,...) an 3.5 bis 4 Tagen in der Woche im Ausbildungsbetrieb statt und an 1 bis 1.5 Tagen in der Woche in der Berufsschule.
Während Ihrer Ausbildung zur Detailhandelsfachfrau oder zum Detailhandelsfachmann mit eid. Fähigkeitszeugnis werden Sie während Ihrer betrieblichen Ausbildung in folgenden Bereichen geschult:

  • Betriebskenntnisse
  • Bewirtschaftung

In der Berufsfachschule wird Ihnen Wissen in diesen Bereichen vermittelt:

Eine Grundbildung (Lehre) als Detailhandelsfachmann / Detailhandelsfachfrau können Sie in einem von insgesamt 28 Bereichen absolvieren. Diese sind Eisenwaren, Elektrofach, Farben, Do-it-yourself, Haushalt, Möbel, Teppich und Bodenbeläge, Textil, Parfümerie, Sportartikel, Schuhe, Lederwaren und Reiseartikel, Uhren-Schmuck-Edelsteine. Zudem können Sie die Branche Post, Consumer-Electronics, Autoteile-Logistik, Papeterie, Spielwaren, Musikinstrumente, Ton-Bildträger und Musikalien wählen. Auch Nahrungs- und Genussmittel, Kiosk, Bäckerei / Konditorei / Confiserie, Fleischwirtschaft stehen zur Wahl, ebenso wie Flower, Landi, Garden und auch Zoofachhandel.

Wer eine Ausbildung zur/zum Detailhandelsfachfrau /-fachmann mit einem eidgenössischen Fähifkeitszeugnis absolvieren möchte, muss folgende Kriterien erfüllen:
  • Abgeschlossene Volksschule oberste Schulstufe oder
  • Abgeschlossene Volksschule mittlere Stufe mit guten Leistungen
